Food Assistance Program benefits
Good news for families:
Despite the federal government shutdown, school meals will continue as usual.
Here’s why:
The National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs are funded differently than SNAP (food stamps). They receive advance federal funding through the USDA, allowing schools to keep serving meals even when other federal programs are paused.
However, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has shared that there may be a delay in November 2025 Food Assistance Program (FAP) benefits.
If your SNAP benefits are delayed or your family needs food assistance, there are local resources ready to help:
🥫 Find nearby food banks and pantries:
• Feeding America – Find Your Local Food Bank
• FoodPantries.org – Local Food Pantries
🍎 The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP):
Use the TEFAP Interactive Map to find food distribution sites near you.
📞 Call 211 or visit Michigan 2-1-1 to connect with local food assistance programs and other community resources.
We will share any updates if meal programs are affected.
For now, school breakfasts and lunches will continue without interruption.
