Determination: Ohio Schools Work to Connect, Engage and Lift Scholar Achievement

Five Ohio schools joined the PLA Network this school year, and despite challenges these schools have surmounted, more big things are on the horizon.

PLA has secured continuation of a half a million dollars in grant funding for its Ohio schools in order to allocate resources for summer learning, small group after school instruction, and more opportunities for scholars to close the achievement gap.

This federally funded grant program supports high-quality, out-of-school time learning opportunities and related activities for students who attend eligible schools.

In addition to a free summer learning program and continued efforts to provide every single scholar with a laptop or iPad for learning, the funding also supports PLA in providing Reading Advantage for Ohio families. Reading Advantage is a free after-school learning program that enhances reading skills by combining small group tutoring, additional instruction and homework assistance. The program will help scholars in making reading gains while also supporting families in providing safe, fun and interactive learning experiences for scholars outside of school hours.

While schools across the country work to recover for time lost this school year, PLA’s goal is to provide Ohio scholars with the tools and resources to catch up and forge ahead.
